Best places to stay in kyoto

After 3 days in Tokyo, a visit to Kyoto was the step back in time to traditional Japan that we were looking for. Stay in or near the Gion district if possible. We ended every day in Gion. The district has traditional Japanese architecture, temples; men and women in traditional kimonos, and lots of great food. Best place to buy gifts to bring home.
